Not all laser hair removal is the same – do your research

May 14, 2018

If you’ve decided that shaving, waxing, plucking, threading or cream hair removal just isn’t working for you anymore. You might have started to consider laser hair removal. But you need to know upfront that not all laser hair removal is the same. Before you book any treatment courses you need to have done your research. Know what you are signing up for what you can expect to get as end results.

Where do you start and what do you need to know?

The laser hair removal market used to be regulated. Meaning that only clinics with the right kit, training and CQC registration were allowed to offer these treatments. This meant it was only Doctors that could provide the treatment. It’s still like this in many other countries today because of safety.

In October 2008, the regulations were completely scrapped in the UK. This has meant lots of salons have now started to offer hair removal deals at cheap prices.

Laser hair removal deals are often all over Groupon. There are even kits you can buy to do it yourself at home. However, not all laser hair removal is the same. Getting a cheap deal will likely not give you the results you want.

Not all laser hair removal is the same – what are your options?

You can pick between a home IPL kit, IPL in a salon or laser hair removal in a clinic.

IPL stands for Intense Pulsed Light. Strictly this isn’t laser hair removal at all. It is using wavelengths of bright light from what is effectively a light blub. The light is absorbed by the colour pigmentation in the hair and skin.  As the pigmentation absorbs the light energy it heats up the hair. Often this energy is insufficient to kill the hair follicle meaning the hairs actually grow back finer, lighter and more difficult to remove.

True laser hair removal, uses a medical grade laser to emit a specific wavelength directly to the hair roots to heat and kill the follicle. This sounds a lot like IPL but this technology gets to the root and kills it far more effectively than IPL because of the strength of the laser.

Which is best for you?

IPL kits that you can use at home or IPL from a salon, might get you some short-term hair reduction from a course of treatments. But it won’t get you the longer-term reduction that a medical grade laser will achieve with a well trained and experienced Laser practitioner.

It is proven that people are not achieving the same reduction in hair growth with IPL as they are with laser hair removal. The benefits of IPL treatments are actually more for reducing skin pigmentation and vascular conditions than achieving hair reduction, as can be read in this article from The Telegraph.

Laser hair removal can be expensive for a treatment course, but the aim is that the end result will give you a significant and long-lasting reduction in hair growth.
