Hyperpigmentation
Hyperpigmentation and post inflammatory hyperpigmentation, are conditions which refer to uneven skin pigmentation, normally triggered by excessive exposure to the sun or skin trauma. This can result in the formation of dark spots and patches across several parts of the body, including the face, neck, hands and stomach.
These changes in colour, which are the result of an overproduction of melanin, can manifest as sun or age spots, melasma and in the aftermath of any trauma experienced by the skin.
Even though it can affect people of all skin types, hyperpigmentation is more prevalent in those with darker skin and may emerge during pregnancy or as a side effect of acne or eczema or other skin trauma.
