Scarring

Scars are a natural by-product of the skin healing process and often appear on the body in the aftermath of a significant wound or injury. Although these can fade over time, they will never fully disappear – something which those affected often find very difficult to deal with.

In addition to this, there are several different types of scar and these can present themselves in many different ways.

Keloid scars describe a variation of scar that derives its appearance from an overgrowth of tissue, a common event triggered when too much collagen is produced during times of healing. These may also become itchy and can limit movement. Hypertrophic scars are similar to keloid scars but aren’t nearly as restrictive, particularly as most of these enjoy an improvement in appearance after around 6 months.

Scars can also form after the skin has been burnt and may be linked to conditions such as acne and chicken pox.
